The 5 Ws: Essential Elements of a Strong Book Proposal

Who: Who is Your Protagonist or Central Figure?

The heart of any story is its characters. In your book proposal, clearly identify your protagonist or central figure. Whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction, your central figure should be compelling and relatable. Explain who they are, what drives them, and why readers will care about their journey.

What: What Happens in Your Book?

Outline the main events or arguments in your book. What is the plot or the central theme? For fiction, provide a brief summary of the storyline, highlighting key events and turning points. For nonfiction, summarize the main arguments or the information you’ll cover. Make sure to showcase what makes your book unique and interesting.

Where: Where is it Set?

Setting plays a crucial role in storytelling. Describe the setting of your book in vivid detail. Is it a bustling city, a remote village, or an entirely fictional world? The setting should enhance the story and help immerse readers in your book. For nonfiction, the setting could be the context or environment in which your topic is explored.

When: When Does it Take Place?

The time period in which your story is set can significantly influence the narrative. Specify whether your book is set in the past, present, or future. If it spans multiple time periods, highlight this aspect as it can add depth to the story. For nonfiction, discuss the relevance of the timing of your book’s subject matter.

Why: Why is Your Book Important Now?

This is arguably the most critical W. Explain why your book is important and why it needs to be published now. What current events or trends make your book timely? How does it address a gap in the market or offer a new perspective? Convincing agents and publishers of the book’s relevance and potential impact is key to a successful proposal.
