We are thrilled to share some exciting news with our readers today! Carter Hasegawa at Candlewick Press has acquired world English rights, in a preempt, to Kip Wilson’s highly anticipated middle-grade debut, “Backpack, Boy, Berlin“, illustrated by the talented Matt Schu.
Set against the backdrop of World War II, “Backpack, Boy, Berlin” tells the gripping true story of Don Health Jr., an 11-year-old boy who found himself thrust into a world of danger and espionage. As the son of an American diplomat, Don becomes a crucial link between his father and Mildred Harnack, a fearless leader in the anti-Nazi resistance. His secret missions and courageous acts will inspire readers of all ages.
We are especially excited about this project because it not only promises to be a captivating read, but it also sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of history. Kip Wilson’s writing has been praised for its authenticity and emotional depth, and we have no doubt that “Backpack, Boy, Berlin” will leave a lasting impact on its readers.
Adding to the allure of this book is the stunning artwork by Matt Schu. His illustrations beautifully complement the narrative, bringing Don’s story to life in vivid detail.
Publication for “Backpack, Boy, Berlin” is planned for fall 2026, and we cannot wait to share this incredible book with you. Stay tuned for updates and exclusive sneak peeks!
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Roseanne Wells at Lucinda Literary, who represented the author, and Chad W. Beckerman at the CAT Agency, who represented the illustrator. Without their hard work and dedication, this project would not have come to fruition.
In the meantime, mark your calendars for fall 2026 and get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey with Don Health Jr. and “Backpack, Boy, Berlin”!
